14 Foundational Skills Teams Need for Success in the Digital Age

As part of its research for the new report "The New Foundational Skills for the Digital Economy", Burning Glass Technologies examined 150 million unique job postings in the United States.

The results suggest that three inter-related categories of skill types (containing a total of 14 foundational skills) are the cornerstones upon which digital transformation takes place.

These are: Business Enabler Skills, Human Skills, and Digital Building Blocks.

In the first of a three part series, we look at Business Enabler Skills. Business enablement capabilities are those which allow you to unlock your organization's potential and which facilitate overlaying activities to function more effectively and efficiently. Burning Glass considers these to include business processes, project management, digital design and communicating data. Companies will be competing for employees with these abilities and seeking to develop them internally.

Consider these few facts:

  • Demand for these foundational skills grew 2% to 323% between 2012 and 2017
  • 18% of U.S. job openings requested Project Management skills in 2017
  • Over 7 million job openings in 2017 called for at least one of these skill sets
  • Business Enabler skills aren't only critical in tech roles. In fact, 32% to 70% of openings in 2017 were outsideIT and Analytics jobs.
